There is a dimension outside time and space where pieces of ancient lands have been mashed together into a new world, meant to serve as the personal playground of the demon Orochi where he could entertain himself by fighting against and conquering the most powerful warriors from human history. He nearly succeeded, but in the end, those humans won and destroyed him. Orochi's original incarnation is no more. However, defeating him didn't send the warriors all home to their own times as some expected. Instead, the rift between the mystical realm and the real world opened even wider, and the power of Orochi's spirit continued to rip up whole castles and towns by the roots, bring them to his dimension, and plop them down next to existing lands. Warlords weren't the only ones to come with them – farmers and peasants came too, artisans and musicians, strategists, and children. When they weren't busy trying to fend off the remnants of Orochi's army still bent on conquest, they turned to old feuds, fighting amongst themselves to become the supreme ruler. Some worked to preserve peace and protect the innocent, others strove to make their own dreams of grandeur come true. Some discovered they had been given a second chance in life, and lived to make the most of it – or squandered it.
This mystical realm is still in flux. Orochi may have been vanquished, but his servants are still out there, and the lands are still overrun by demon armies. The mystic Taira Kiyomori has not been discouraged by his failure to resurrect Orochi, he continues to try in the hopes that if he can succeed, Orochi will return and destroy this entire dimension. On top of this, new territories are still being transplanted, and bringing with them strange and wonderful new inhabitants. Those who have been in this world for a while are wary, they know Kiyomori is out there working his own evil magic and with all the upheaval, it seems like things are only going from bad to worse. There is no way home until someone can finally break the hold Orochi's spirit has on this patchwork dimension. The problem is, no one, not even the mystics themselves, can say whether doing so will safely send everyone back to their own times – or destroy them all in one final cataclysm.
The Unrivaled takes place in the world of Warriors Orochi, set in a time after the false end of WO3, in which the Hydra was defeated but it didn't cause the world to end. In addition to the video game's world, every time a character is apped representing a new canon, a piece of their world will be added to the game. The game world will be constantly expanding, according to the way the WO franchise works.
Warriors Orochi in a Nutshell (for the canonblind)
So there was this snake demon named Orochi. He comes from some ancient legends but for the sake of brevity we'll start where Warriors Orochi starts: Orochi was freed from his prison in the mystic realm by his vassal Da Ji, and decided it would be a lot of fun if he yanked a bunch of famous warriors from across time – well, two specific periods in time – and threw them together in a dimension of his own devising so he could fight against them all and conquer them. He created a world out of small pieces of ancient China and feudal Japan and then rolled over it with his armies, crushing everything. Several famed warlords were captured, others were blackmailed into fighting on Orochi's side, and still others saw his immense power and decided it would be fun to serve him instead of their old masters. Things looked bleak for a time, but a resistance movement formed, and a Coalition of factions rose to combat the demon armies. The combined efforts of Zhao Yun of Shu, Sun Ce of Wu, Cao Pi of Wei, and the mighty lords Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen, and Uesugi Kenshin, brought about an end to Orochi and freed them to rebuild in a time of peace. Or so they thought.
Since Orochi created the world, destroying him would break it apart and send them all back to their own timelines, right? Wrong. Life simply went on, the alternate world continued to exist and Orochi's minions all survived. His strategist Da Ji and a powerful sorcerer turned demon known as Taira Kiyomori worked to resurrect Orochi and give their lord new life to continue his reign of terror. The factions of the Three Kingdoms and the Sengoku warlords had just gone about their business, building a new life in this strange world, but were too late to stop the resurrection when it happened and had to contend with Orochi all over again. The second time was not the charm, though. The demon dimension still went on existing, and even more people and more lands kept getting brought into it. It seemed as though there was something unusual about the nature of the way Orochi's spirit is intertwined with the land, keeping it alive even though he seems to be dead. His aura spawned an enormous Hydra which nearly succeeded in wiping all the humans out, but thanks to Kaguya's ability to time-travel, disaster was averted and the Hydra was destroyed, only to respawn Orochi X again. The mystics united with the humans to destroy him a second time, and really really thought this was going to finally be their chance to break the world apart and send everyone home...but nope. Didn't happen. At least, not in the "first" ending of WO3. This is where the story of The Unrivaled begins, as the various factions try to keep their lands and people safe despite the world starting to go a little out of control, and Kiyomori persisting in his goal of resurrecting Orochi so he can destroy his foes once and for all.
The first territories to be ripped out of reality and plunked down in Orochi's realm were from the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China and Sengoku era of Japan, and for a while comprised the entirety of the world. They were literally just pieces – castles, towns, mountain passes, maybe a minor province at the largest. Every piece of land was disrupted in some way by the upheaval – buildings have been uprooted and transplanted into other territories or otherwise moved or destroyed, and there are fields of lava everywhere, sometimes blocking familiar travel routes or bubbling up in the middle of a battlefield or castle. Over time, pieces of other worlds began to seep in, everything from the fantasy realm of Vyashion from Zil'Oll to a small chunk of modern Tokyo thanks to Ninja Gaiden. This allowed notable names from history to meet one another and fight alongside – or against – each other. As the new territories were melded into the world, other people came with them, not just the famed warriors Orochi wanted but their armies, and the citizens of their kingdoms. Thus, while the main goal has always been stopping Orochi and his army, once in a while there were additional issues to contend with, like protecting peasants, escorting lost handmaidens, and hunting for treasure. Sooner or later, though, the real reason Orochi's handiwork has not yet been undone will come to light, and the collected warriors of ancient times will have to fight for their lives in the hope that they might finally all return home.
